Bathroom Lighting
Bathroom lighting is an important part of bathroom design. The most beautiful bathroom will not be a success if there is not enough light to appreciate it or make it functional. When you are planning your bathroom lighting you should ensure that the lighting is adequate for the tasks that will be carried out in the bathroom. These are tasks such as shaving and makeup - tasks that require good clear bathroom lighting to achieve the desired result.
A popular source of lighting for these tasks is halogen. Halogen is a white light unlike the yellow tinges that you will get from an incandescent light (the standard household bulb). Halogen is a light close to daylight and will give you true definitions.
So what sort of bathroom lighting could you use?
Recessed or Spotlights are popular for the bathroom - which can also be combined with wall lighting above mirrors.
Lighting on the ceiling above the mirror should be angled towards the mirror so light is reflected off the mirror and reduces shadows.
A wall light combined with this overhead lighting will complete a shadow less face.Once the task lighting is complete - the second consideration would be the mood lighting or the atmosphere you may want to create.
The bathroom is become a place where people can relax and enjoy a good soak in the bath away from the noise and pressures of the outside world but this will not happen if it does not have a relaxing atmosphere.
You may look at combining more wall lighting, maybe even an incandescent light which is warmer to create the mood. And there is always the candle, the romantic light - always good to have and creates the perfect mood.
When you are planning the lighting and the mood in your bathroom, do not forget natural light will be available during the day and allow for that.
Also remember that light colours and glass reflect light more than dark colours which absorb light - this will affect the amount of light reflected off the surfaces in your bathroom.
You may also need to allow for a heater or fan which may require ducting. Ensure this is discussed with your designer and lighting consultant during the design process and look at options available for your specific bathroom needs. You can get units that combine heater, fan and lighting into one.
Designing the bathroom lighting for your bathroom is an important part of the end result - so ask your bathroom designer or lighting consultant to advise you on the best options for your design and budget.
